Character Secrets

Hidden behaviors and details you might miss on first viewing.

hard

Shadow's Telekinesis

Watch the background carefully in any scene with Shadow the cat. Objects move slightly on their own — a cup slides, a book shifts, a curtain flutters with no breeze. Shadow has telekinetic powers and is completely aloof about it. Most viewers won't notice on first viewing.

medium

Gerald's Surveillance

Gerald Pryor's house is directly adjacent to the Marvin garage. In every exterior shot, look for Gerald — he's always watching. Peering through blinds, checking his perfectly trimmed hedge, adjusting a garden gnome that happens to face the garage. He's six feet from the truth.

medium

Einstein Knows

Einstein the scarlet macaw understands the machine better than Sam does. Watch his reactions during machine scenes — he's frustrated, not confused. He communicates, but frustratingly. Pay attention to what he says.

easy

Jenny's Glasses Signal

Jenny's oversized colored-rim glasses are her visual signature. Glasses ON means mom mode. Glasses OFF means someone is in serious trouble. Watch for the glasses-off moments — they always precede a reckoning.

Visual Secrets

Background details and visual gags hidden in the animation.

medium

The Fish Tank Performances

During every living room scene, a 5-6 second close-up of the fish tank appears at a random moment. The 20 fish are performing famous scenes from classic plays, movies, and musicals. Nobody in the family acknowledges it. The audience can't predict when it happens.

easy

Sam's Steampunk Inventions

The machine is the centerpiece, but look around the garage and house for smaller steampunk inventions — a gear-driven coffee maker, a brass-and-glass toaster, clockwork gadgets on shelves. Every Sam invention has the same handmade Victorian-industrial aesthetic.

easy

The Bumper Sticker

Sam's faded forest green station wagon has quirky antennas and a bumper sticker that reads: We Travel Far And Wide. On a show about interdimensional travel. Hidden in plain sight.

Recurring Gags

Running jokes and patterns that connect episodes.

easy

The Wrong Timeline Rating

Every episode ends with a Wrong Timeline Rating measuring how far off the rails Sam's adventure went. Like The Simpsons' couch gag, it's a signature element that changes every episode. Watch for the rating scale — it tells you how badly things went.

medium

Vinny vs Laurent

The pizza rivalry between Vinny Bianchi and Chef Laurent is Plainview's favorite spectator sport. Watch for escalating passive-aggressive moves between their restaurants across the street from each other. Every episode has at least one background moment.

medium

Hamdini's Escapes

Hamdini the hamster has escaped from the microwave, the toolbox, and the glove compartment. No cage can hold him. In every episode, watch for where Hamdini turns up — he's always somewhere he shouldn't be, with his tiny cape.
